It’s the Spaces In Between the Words That Matter

The power of fiction does not necessarily lay on the page in the individual words and the things they signify. It exists in the mind of the reader as she fills in the slivers of space between each word and allows the story to shade and shape her mind. Black print on a white page can conjure up a vivid scene, a whole world using only language—words and punctuation. This image, a page from a short story I am working on, emphasizes the importance of imagination and connection in literature. While each word is complete and beautiful on its own, it is only when we read them together, along with the white space—what is not on the page—that we can find meaning in a text.
